  • What does For Practitioner Dispensing Only mean?

    Our products are practitioner-prescribed complementary medicines listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

    Our products are exclusively supplied to healthcare professionals as described in section 42AA of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 and retail sale should only occur after consultation with a patient.

    A dispensing pack is defined in TGO69 as: ‘in relation to complementary healthcare, [dispensing pack] means a pack which is to be supplied solely to complementary healthcare practitioners for supply to a person after affixing an instruction label following a consultation with that person.’

    A consultation with a healthcare professional ought to provide a discreet area where patient privacy can be assured. The practitioner is expected to maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date clinical records; retain all patient records in a safe and secure area for the duration required by state or federal law.

    We define a practitioner as a: ‘Chiropractor, Dentist (including Hygienist, Prosthetics, Therapist), General Practitioner, Psychiatrist, Physician, Naturopath, Nutritionist, Optometrist, Osteopath, Pharmacist, Physiotherapist, Psychologist’ with the relevant qualifications from a recognised institution and a registered association.

    Prior to us completing a practitioner’s registration for direct sale or for the purposes of dispensary using our Patient Billing and Delivery Service, we do require that practitioners disclose their profession, the institution where they gained their qualifications, and the association they are registered with as a healthcare professional. Professional details will not be disclosed without a practitioner’s expressed permission (refer to our privacy policy on this website). If a practitioner chooses, we can include their practices in our ‘Find a Practitioner’ section on this website, for patient convenience.

    It is the practitioner’s responsibility to ensure that, in distributing any products, they comply with any applicable state and federal laws, including the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, regulating the public display and sale of goods.

    As a practitioner, you agree to indemnify us in relation to any claim arising from the failure to observe any law regulating the public display and sale of goods that we sell you.

    Our products may not be advertised in print or electronic media without prior authorisation from us.

    The prescribing practitioner is required to demonstrate to Spectrumceuticals that they are registered with a professional association, including identifying the clinic or location where they conduct consultations.

    Our company policy is our high potency formulas are for dispensing through healthcare professionals whose primary business is patient care.

  • What should I do if I experience an unexpected reaction?

    Contact your doctor immediately. You should always report any unexpected reaction after starting probiotics to your doctor so that the symptom may be evaluated.

  • Can I consume probiotics while on antibiotics?

    Our probiotics are compatible with most types of drugs, though particular formulas use unique strains which can be sensitive to particular pharmaceuticals.

    Please always consult with your doctor regarding medications and interactions. If taken with antibiotics,  probiotics should be consumed away from antibiotic doses thereby maximising its efficacy.

  • What if I experience bloating symptoms?

    Mild bloating may occur during the first few days after starting use. This is usually due to the changing intestinal microflora. If you experience bloating, you may need to reduce your daily intake to allow this adjustment.

  • If diarrhoea persists?

    If diarrhoea persists for more than 6 hours in infants under 6 months; 12 hours in children under 3 years; 24 hours in children aged 3–6 years; or 48 hours in adults and children over 6 years, seek medical advice.

    Drink plenty of water. If symptoms persist consult your healthcare practitioner.

  • Stability of Spectrumceuticals probiotics

    All Spectrumceutials probiotics are encapsulated and bottled with an overage (additional active ingredients) above 30 percent to ensure that we meet our regulatory obligations and that our label accurately measures the potency of our formulation for the duration of the product until expiration stored under normal conditions. The most common question we receive regarding our probiotics is; how does temperature variability effect the colon forming unit count (CFU) of the formula during transportation?

    Our probiotics are refrigerated up until they are couriered to your premise. We ship within a fit for purpose polyfoam transport pack (medi-esky) with frozen gel pack providing adequate protection for the probiotics to survive up to 38 degrees Celsius. Typically, the gel pack will be defrosted upon receipt, this should not be a concern.

    Transportation trials on our encapsulated probiotic Pro8-Forte formula within an amber glass bottle packed in a medi-esky with gel pack demonstrate that at 38 degrees Celsius for 72 hours the probiotic activity was still viable above the label claims.

  • What happens if my probiotics are left at room temperature?

    Our probiotic formulations can be stored at room temperature, approximately 25°C for up to one month without having a major effect on potency. If it is left at room temperature for long periods of time or exposed to excessive heat, the number of beneficial bacteria can greatly reduce. We recommend you store Spectrumceuticals probiotics below 8 degrees Celsius.

  • How long will probiotics keep before expiring?

    If stored under refrigeration (3–8°C), our probiotics are guaranteed through to the ‘Expiry Date’ on the label.

  • Will transportation effect my probiotics therapeutic benefit?
    For small orders of probiotics, we ship within a fit for purpose foil insulated bubble-wrapped post pack with frozen therma gel to protect against extreme heat.
    On arrival to your premise or residence the pack and bottle will be at ambient temperature, our stability data shows that the probiotics have not deteriorated and are shelf stable for up to one month.
    If left on the shelf our probiotics will deteriorate over time so we suggest that you place them in the refrigerator upon receipt. So everyday our probiotics are left at room temperature they lose one day of expiration date.
    If the probiotics are kept refrigerated they will meet the colon forming unit (CFU) count on the label up to the expiry date on the label.
    Even once opened our probiotics are stable until the expiration date on the bottle. For more technical information read on FAQ on probiotic stability in this section.

  • How long can I consume probiotics?

    The length of time depends on the specific reason for which the probiotic has been recommended. Therefore, it is important to consult with your healthcare practitioner as to how long a course of probiotics may be taken. Different formulations have specific regulatory instructions on the label, if taking Pro8-Forte™ please consult with your practitioner and read the directions on the label.

  • When is the best time of day to take probiotics?

    Ideally, probiotics should be taken with or just prior to a meal containing some fats. Recent studies suggest that the survival of the bacteria is linked with the fat content more than protein. Probiotics given 30 minutes after a meal do not survive in as high numbers.

  • What are Spectrumceuticals probiotic capsules made of?

    We use three different types of capsules depending on the time that we want the capsules to disintegrate based on the purpose of the particular formula.


    All three types of capsules are made of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) which is 100% vegetable cellulose and suitable for vegetarians.

  • Our capsules are NOT enteric coated.

    In specific formulations we use DR™ Delayed Release capsules. These capsules also consist of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC),  which is 100% vegetable cellulose and suitable for vegetarians.

  • What excipients (inactive ingredients) do Spectrumceuticals use in their formulations?

    An excipient is an inactive substance used with the active ingredient of a medicine or dietary supplement to fill, bind, lubricate or flavour formulations for the following reasons:
    • to allow accurate dosing of a medicine
    • to aid in the manufacturing process
    • to aid stability and the prevention of denaturation over shelf life
    • to mask unpleasant-tasting active ingredients to aid compliance.

    Most nutritional dietary supplements contain some inactive excipients. All of the excipients used by Spectrumceuticals are casein and gluten free.

    We use microcrystalline cellulose in minute quantities as a bulking agent. Microcrystalline cellulose is an inert plant cellulose and safe to use in dietary supplements and listed medicines. When used as a bulking agent, microcrystalline cellulose adds mass to the formulation, thus facilitating precise dosing.

    Some of our formulations contain minute quantities of silicon dioxide, due to its anti-caking properties. Silicon dioxide is inert and non-toxic as a dietary supplement.

    In encapsulated probiotic formulas we use small quantities of vegetable-grade magnesium stearate as a lubricant for encapsulating our two-piece vegetable capsules. Lubricants prevent ingredients from sticking to the capsule-filling machine and stop ingredients from clumping together in a formulation.

    When encapsulating probiotics it is important not to over heat the bacteria so lubricants are necessary for long term stability. We cannot use leucine as the lubricant due to risk of activating the probiotic and effecting the viability of the colony forming unit count.

  • Where do Spectrumceuticals source their probiotic strains (raw ingredients) from?

    We source our strains from four different probiotic suppliers from France, Italy, United States and Japan.

    Spectrumceuticals source probiotic strains from particular companies due to the number of documented scientific studies on these strains provided and their manufacturing facilities are certified good manufacturing practices (cGMP).

  • What medium are Spectrumceuticals probiotics cultured on during the fermentation process?

    Our probiotic ingredients are grown on a dairy-free and soy-free medium, when they are not we will declare on the product literature and will not claim on the label that the probiotic is dairy free.

    All our probiotics are lactose and casein free and have been third party tested within an Australian food allergen laboratory in Melbourne, Australia.

    Documentation:

    We dispatch with a completed CN23 form as required by Australian and US Customs.

    All shipments of supplements to the United States are accompanied with a prior notice of shipment prepared by Spectrumceuticals.

    We include the necessary duplicates including the invoice which is also saved to your My Account page online at our website when you log in.  The invoice only shows the price you paid for our products with shipping on an itemised line, there are no sales taxes or customs duties collected by Spectrumceuticals Pty Ltd. United States sales tax and customs duties are outlined below as a guide and may not necessarily be correct or up to date with US requirements.

    Sales Tax:

    We are unaware of sales tax being applied to international ecommerce purchases from within the United States incurring sales tax unless the order is above $800 US inclusive of shipping charges.

    Customs Duties:

    The maximum value of any individual purchase is $800 USD that we will ship per order in a given week due to the de minimis value threshold, orders above this value incur US Customs duties and taxes

    Customs and Shipping documentation:

    Singapore requires an import permit for many goods. Buyers must ensure that they have the necessary permit if required. A Goods and Services Tax of three per cent of the total of cost, insurance, freight and customs duty applies to all goods and merchandise imported into Singapore. It is the customers responsibility to pay this amount to SG Customs, goods maybe held up if payment is not made in cases exceeding this amount.

    Sales Tax:

    HST and PST / QST may be payable on your order, this varies by province, it is the customers responsibility to pay this amount.

    You’ll be contacted by Canada Post or Customs explaining how to pay any sales tax, duty and fees for dealing with customs. Sales tax are charged on the total value, including:

    postage, packaging and insurance
    any duty you owe

    Malaysia requires an import permit for many goods. Buyers must ensure that they have the necessary permit if required. A Goods and Services Tax may apply on the total of cost, insurance, freight and customs duty applies to all goods and merchandise imported into Malaysia. It is the customers responsibility to pay this amount to Malaysian Customs, goods maybe held up if payment is not made in cases exceeding this amount.

Japanese sales tax and customs duties are outlined below as a guide and may not necessarily be correct or up to date with Japanese requirements.

    Our probiotic supplements and vitamin minerals are considered ‘foods with health claims’.

    Sales Tax:

    There is an 8% consumption tax on all goods imported to Japan. This percentage is calculated on;

    the price paid for the goods
    postage, packaging and insurance
    any duty you owe

    If you don’t pay the tax the shipment may be destroyed or returned to Spectrumceuticals. We will not refund seized or returned parcels.

    Customs Duties:

    All post items sent from overseas that have a customs value of less than 200,000 ($2,300 AUD) must undergo customs inspection. Customs inspection is conducted at branch offices of the Japan Post where a Customs Office for Overseas Mail, etc., of Japan Customs is located.

    If the total tax charges, including customs duty, are less than 10,000 or if duty is more than 10,000 but less than 300,000 for the item and it is requested to be delivered to the recipient, a “Notice of Assessment for International Mail” and the statement of payment (which will also serve as receipt of payment; hereafter the same) will be sent from the customs office through Japan Post Co., Ltd. Because the item will be delivered directly to the recipient, the recipient in question is required to consign duty payment to the Japan Post and pay an amount equivalent to the duty, along with handling charges for the Japan Post (200 per parcel).     A Value Addded Tax (VAT) of 20% may be payable on your order, this is the customers responsibility to pay this amount.

    You’ll be contacted by the French Postal Service or French Customs who will explain how to pay any VAT, duty and fees for dealing with customs. VAT is charged on the total value, including:

    the price paid for the goods
    postage, packaging and insurance
